Changes in Alabama Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s Medicare Fitness Benefit

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama has confirmed its decision to terminate the Medicare fitness benefit starting January 1, as confirmed on December 31 to Becker’s. This change in the Alabama Medicare Advantage plan was triggered by a thorough review of the insurer’s benefits, aimed at maintaining competitiveness and financial stability.

Reasons behind the Termination of the Fitness Benefit

The Alabama health insurance provider stated, “Although we acknowledge that fitness benefits contribute to everyday wellness, these benefits have often been underused. Even after a shift from the SilverSneakers program to a FlexCard fitness allowance in 2024, the usage rate remained low.” The insurer further explained that accommodating the fitness benefits incurs costs that affect all members and contribute to increased medical costs.

Impact on Medicare Advantage Plans in Alabama

The discontinuation of the fitness allowance was deemed necessary to keep premiums and out-of-pocket expenses for core medical benefits steady, especially as healthcare costs continue to rise. The insurer added, “We have deliberately made changes to focus on medical services which are widely used by our members.”

Decline in Fitness Benefits Nationwide

According to a previous study by the Better Medicare Alliance and Avalere Health, individual Medicare Advantage plans offering fitness supplemental benefits have been declining. BCBS of Minnesota, while using SilverSneakers, unveiled plans to discontinue membership coverage for two gym chains in 2026.

Alternatives to the Fitness Benefit

Despite this change, BCBS of Alabama clarified that its Blue365 product will continue to offer discounts on gym memberships, allowing members to maintain their fitness regimen at reduced costs.
