CENTAM Guardian 2025: Boosting Security Cooperation in US South

Details of CENTAM GUARDIAN 2025

U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) and the Guatemalan Ministry of Defense are set to co-host the multinational military exercise, CENTAM GUARDIAN 2025, from May 12-23, 2025 across diverse locations in Guatemala. Military and security forces from nations including Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Honduras, and the United States come together for this exercise, a tradition being upheld since 2018.

Implications of CENTAM GUARDIAN 2025

The multinational military exercise emphasizes the mutual commitment towards regional stability, peace, and prosperity among the participating nations. It also aligns with the White House’s “America First” Foreign Policy. The strategic execution of CENTAM GUARDIAN 2025 bolsters SOUTHCOM’s lines of effort by fortifying partnerships and augmenting the regional capacity to counter threats that transgress national boundaries.

Threats and Challenges in the Region

According to SOUTHCOM Commander Navy Adm. Alvin Holsey, the illicit activities of cartels and transnational criminal organizations continue to destabilize communities, representing a significant regional threat. Such groups, along with malign state actors, wield influence that poses risks to security, undermines democracies, and challenges sovereignty.

Significance of Multinational Military Exercises

Adm. Holsey emphasized the importance of collective preparedness in combating these threats. He said, “We must work together, train together and strengthen readiness together to collectively face these threats. Exercises like CENTAM GUARDIAN strengthen our partnerships and enhance our persistent efforts to combat regional threats.”

Training Objectives and Local Impact

The exercise aims to develop agile and responsive forces prepared to tackle dynamic security challenges, including transnational threats, natural disasters, and humanitarian crises. Participating forces will fine-tune their interoperability and collective capacity to respond effectively to intricate scenarios. Residents of Guatemala may witness an increased security presence, such as military helicopters and aircraft, as the personnel and equipment are positioned ahead of the exercise’s official start date.
