Health Advisory Against Morning Walks Amid Severe Air Quality Index

The Delhi government issued a health advisory on Saturday in response to worries about the city’s deteriorating air quality. The notice strongly advises against taking part in physical activities outdoors such as morning walks and jogging, particularly on days when the Air Quality Index (AQI) is severe.

This advisory also emphasizes that pregnant women, individuals with underlying health conditions, children, and older adults should minimize their exposure to air pollution. For more information about the effects of air pollution on health, you can visit this World Health Organization page.

Guidelines to Avoid Exposure to Polluted Air

To reduce exposure to polluted air, the Delhi health department suggests that you avoid locations with high air pollution. These areas include slow and congested traffic roads, polluting industries, and construction or demolition sites.

Additionally, you’re encouraged to avoid outdoor exercises such as morning and late evening walks, jogging, and other physical activities, especially on days with severe AQI.

Additional Recommendations to Prevent Health Issues Due to Air Pollution

As part of the preventive measures, the government suggests avoiding the use of tobacco products, refraining from burning mosquito coils and incense sticks in enclosed spaces, and not burning materials such as wood, leaves, crop residues, and waste.

It’s also recommended to frequently wash your eyes with running water, gargle regularly with warm water, and maintain a healthy, balanced diet that includes fruits and vegetables.

Consult a Doctor if Necessary and Practice Safe Habits

If you experience symptoms such as breathlessness, dizziness, cough, chest discomfort or pain, or irritation in the eyes, you should consult a physician immediately. You’re also advised to use public transport or carpool and to wet mop instead of sweep in your home and workplace.

Fortunately, the city’s air quality improved somewhat after some overnight rain on Friday. At 7:00 am on Saturday, Delhi’s AQI was recorded to be 219.
