Empowering Triumph: Team Phoenix and Cancer Survivors’ Collaboration

Are you ready for a challenging adventure? Join Kayla Kutz as she steps up to train for her first sprint-triathlon. An exciting journey comprising a swim of 0.47 miles, a bike ride covering 12.4 miles, and a final 3.1-mile run/walk.

“The initial swim is likely to be the most daunting part for me,” says Kutz.

Key Points To Remember

  • Team Phoenix is a comprehensive 14-week fitness and educational program by Aurora Health Care for female cancer survivors
  • The core aim of Team Phoenix is to empower cancer survivors to regain their health and vitality by preparing for a sprint-triathlon
  • Kayla Kutz, a breast cancer survivor, asserts that Team Phoenix has given her a fresh lease of life and restored her health
  • “Indeed, we have the ability to conquer challenges,” asserts Kutz. “We have the power to reclaim our lives.\”

Preparing for a triathlon is as mentally exhausting as it is physically. However, Kutz reassures that she is not alone in her journey.

A group of women are supporting each other in this endeavor. They are all participants of Team Phoenix, a unique 14-week fitness and education program by Aurora Health Care designed especially for women who have overcome cancer.

As a breast cancer survivor, Kutz’s primary motivation is to regain her health and resume her life as it was before her cancer diagnosis.

Team Phoenix’s objective is to restore health and wellness by training for a sprint-triathlon, with coaches, healthcare professionals, and mentors providing guidance at every step.

Kutz’s mentor, Andrea Reynolds, joined Team Phoenix last year. A breast cancer survivor herself, Reynolds is an oncology occupational therapist at Aurora Health Care.

What sets Team Phoenix apart, according to Reynolds, is its inclusive nature. “We have participants of different body types and abilities. It makes you realize that if you could endure cancer treatment, you certainly have the strength to become a triathlete.”

The experiences shared with Team Phoenix have not only fostered camaraderie between Kutz and Reynolds but also instilled in them the confidence to push their boundaries.

“We truly have the ability to overcome challenges,” reaffirms Kutz. “We have the power to reclaim our lives.”

Team Phoenix is all set to participate in the Tri-ing for A Cure Triathlon on July 26 at Ottawa Lake State Park.
