Jess Brown, founder of The Glute Recruit in Westchester, New York, points out the potential risks of TikTok workout trends. “There are a lot of unsustainable and unrealistic workouts on TikTok, and even some dangerous advice,” she stated. Similarly, Monica Jones, a certified personal trainer in Washington, DC, highlighted that much of the fitness information shared on TikTok is not scientifically backed or shared by fitness professionals.

Unfortunately, some of the most viewed TikTok fitness videos are among the most problematic. These include challenges that promise rapid weight loss or specific physique changes within a short period. Brown warns that such guarantees are unrealistic and often prey on people’s insecurities.

One prevalent TikTok fitness challenge promotes developing abdominal muscles or achieving a ‘six-pack’ within a week or two. However, Brown refutes this claim, stating, “We’ve proven again and again that spot reduction isn’t a thing.” Furthermore, some trends, like the dangerous ‘dry scooping’ trend, have even been blocked due to health risks.

Finding Safe and Effective TikTok Workouts

Among the sea of questionable TikTok fitness trends is a potentially safe and effective one: the 12-3-30 workout. This involves walking at 3 mph for 30 minutes on a 12% treadmill incline. However, trainers warn about potential strain on the lower back and joints due to the steep incline.

The challenge lies in distinguishing quality workouts from dangerous fads. Check for certified fitness professionals who prioritize improving strength and cardiovascular health over focusing on body type. A reputable fitness influencer should also emphasize mental well-being and listening to your body.
