Join the Exciting CAPS Adventure Therapy Group: Boost Wellness

Introduction to CAPS Adventure Therapy Group

The Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) has launched an innovative therapy group in collaboration with University Recreation + Wellness. This group, titled “Experiencing Self and Others: UREC,” is an adventure therapy group primarily aimed at helping college students navigate interpersonal issues. These can include social anxiety, conflict resolution, and trust in self and others.

Participation and Access to CAPS Group Therapy

All U of A students are eligible to participate in a CAPS group therapy session. These sessions are covered by the student health and wellness fee, meaning there are no additional costs for you to attend. Providing access to mental health resources aligns with the Division of Student Affairs’ priority of promoting well-being within the U of A community. If you wish to join a CAPS group, you’ll need to complete an initial consultation appointment with CAPS and a group screening within the semester you plan to join.

Adventure Therapy Group: What to Expect

In the adventure therapy group, you will engage in weekly sessions, which encompass activities such as a mountain biking clinic and a climbing clinic. This experiential processing group is designed to foster a stronger sense of self-worth in its participants. As Amy Ference, a mental health clinician at CAPS, explains, “Adventure therapy provides a unique way for students who may be hesitant about traditional therapy to gain the same opportunities for in-depth self-reflection, whilst directly experiencing community, nature, and problem-solving strategies.”

The Benefits of Adventure Therapy

The sessions will provide you with coping mechanisms to help you manage stress. It’s anticipated that as you discover and celebrate your natural strengths through adventure-based activities, you’ll learn to trust both yourself and others more.
