Discover the Magic of Storytime at Your Local Library
Embrace the wonders of Storytime: You could find yourself invited to serve as a guest reader for the delightful weekly Preschool Storytimes hosted at the Bay Farm and West End branch libraries during special events such as Women’s History Month. Libraries could become close to your heart, especially if you spent your childhood exploring their vast collections after school and during the long summer vacations. You might even find yourself embarking on a journey in local politics, much like the successful campaign to build a new Main Library and revamp two branch libraries in Alameda back in 2000, co-directed by Frank Matarrese and his friend.
The Role of Libraries in Community Building
Libraries play a vital role in promoting community well-being, literacy, and lifelong learning. It’s a joy to see young library users, their parents, grandparents, and caregivers engage with everything libraries offer. The Storytime attendees reflect the wonderful ethnic diversity of Alameda, including long-time residents and new arrivals from across the globe. The seasoned librarians host exciting programs that incorporate music, movement, puppets, and reading, captivating the young audience for an hour. It’s a truly enriching experience!
Expanding Storytime in Alameda Libraries
Across Alameda’s three library locations, Storytime is now available every day of the week, with story hours offered in Spanish and Mandarin. For a complete guide to the delightful happenings at your local libraries, visit alamedafree.org or drop by in person.
Alameda: A Town for Families
Alameda earns its reputation as a family-friendly town for several reasons. The safe neighborhoods, top-notch schools, abundant parks, recreational opportunities, and dedicated volunteers contribute to the welcoming environment. Over the past month, local Girl Scout meetings, a Cub Scout pack’s Blue & Gold Banquet, and weekend youth sports teams have all highlighted the community spirit. The parents volunteering as leaders, chaperones, and drivers play a significant role in shaping Alameda into a family-friendly community. Thank you!
Engaging in Democracy in Alameda
Democracy is action! This sentiment was shared at the recent No Kings rally in Alameda. The citizens of Alameda, of all ages, joined millions of Americans in a nationwide demonstration to uphold the democratic, anti-authoritarian principles on which this country was founded. However, change in the nation’s political course can only come from participating in elections. If you are eligible to vote, you must register at registertovote.ca.gov, and then exercise your right in every election.
Your Voice Matters in Alameda
The California Primary election is on June 2, with ballots mailed to all registered voters from May 4. Your vote is your voice; make it heard. Register to vote and encourage others to do the same. The survival of our democracy depends on us ensuring a brighter future for our children and succeeding generations. Because, after all, “democracy” is action.
