OpenTable’s research presents a shift in Mother’s Day celebrations. According to Steve Sintra, senior vice president of Americas Restaurant Sales & Services, people are increasingly opting for eating out to celebrate special women in their lives, thereby sidelining breakfast in bed.

The Emergence of Multi-Day Mother’s Day Festivities

As Sintra indicates, Mother’s Day festivities now extend beyond a single meal. People are planning elaborate dining experiences throughout the weekend and are willing to spend more than they did in previous years. This trend is particularly evident among Gen Z diners.

Generational Differences in Mother’s Day Dining Preferences

A recent survey unveiled some interesting generational preferences when it comes to Mother’s Day celebrations. While 54% of Americans plan to eat out on Mother’s Day, this percentage rises to 65% and 64% for Gen Zers and Millennials, respectively. Comparatively, only 49% of Gen Xers and 39% of Baby Boomers have similar plans.

Spending Trends for Mother’s Day Meals

Those planning to dine out on Mother’s Day are intending to spare no expense. About 62% of diners aim to spend more than they did the previous year, with 71% of Gen Zers and 68% of Millennials leading the pack in terms of generational spending.

The Desire for a Screen-Free Dining Experience

Across generations, most prefer a screen-free dining experience, with 26% of Gen Zers, 24% of Millennials, 27% of Gen Xers, and 26% of Baby Boomers expressing this preference.

OpenTable’s ranking is based on over 14 million diner reviews, diner ratings, and the frequency of ‘brunch’ tags in restaurant reviews. The 100 restaurants featured in the 2024 list are spread across 29 states and Washington, D.C. For four consecutive years, California has had the highest number of restaurants featured on the list (13).
