The Role of UBC Okanagan in Diabetes Education
The UBC Okanagan researchers’ team is once again hosting their popular Diabetes Dialogue night. This event, designed to share accurate and informative content about diabetes, has become a focal point in the community.
The upcoming event on May 21, taking place at Kelowna’s Trinity Church, will showcase UBCO’s top minds discussing and answering queries about exercise and type 2 diabetes.
Addressing Exercise Myths for Type 2 Diabetics
Jonathan Little, a UBC Okanagan professor in the School of Health and Exercise Sciences, discussed the first Diabetes Dialogue night held in March. “The Kelowna community showed keen interest, with many questions about physical activity and its impact on individuals living with type 2 diabetes,” Little shared.
Given the staggering estimate of two million Canadians with diabetes or pre-diabetes, it’s vital to address the exercise myths that often circulate on social media. The Diabetes Dialogue events aim to help Kelowna residents sift through the confusion, allowing them to obtain accurate information from experts in the field.
Expert Guidance for Exercise and Type 2 Diabetes
Guest hosting the evening will be Dr. Alexis Marcotte-Chenard. Over his research career, he has overseen thousands of exercise sessions for type 2 diabetics, with a research focus on cardiovascular health for these individuals.
“We plan to debunk some myths, provide practical tips, and share useful advice that attendees can apply as they aim to lead more active lives,” stated Little.
While the May 21 event is free of charge, registration is necessary. For those who can’t make it in person, a virtual attendance option is available through an online link.
