TL/DR –
The 2025 political landscape in Washington is reportedly set to be shaped by five key storylines. These include House Speaker Mike Johnson’s management of the thin House majority, the defining characteristics of John Thune’s era as the new Senate Republican leader, and how Democrats will manage President-elect Donald Trump 2.0. Also significant will be the emergence of new stars in Congress for both parties and whether or not Trump and his allies will pursue retribution against perceived political foes.

5 key storylines for 2025 Politics
By Sahil Kapur
With the new Congress commencing on Jan. 3, followed by President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20, here are five political narratives of interest in 2025.
1. Mike Johnson’s Challenge with a Slight House Majority
Mike Johnson’s reelection as House speaker on Jan. 3 represents just the beginning. He then faces complex issues such as government funding, debt limit deadlines, and advancing Trump’s agenda with a marginal House majority. After Trump’s endorsement, he is gearing up for a significant career challenge.
2. John Thune’s Era: What Will It Bring?
Senate Republicans will see new leadership in 18 years with John Thune replacing Mitch McConnell. The question is, will Thune dare to defy Trump on any issues?
3. Managing ‘Trump 2.0’: Democrat’s Strategy
Given their 2024 setbacks, Democrats aim to interact with Trump differently this term, focusing more on economic matters. However, their ability to adhere to these kitchen-table matters is yet to be seen.
4. Who Will Be the New Congress Stars?
The 2025 congressional class introduces fresh faces for both parties. Democrats look for a new face for the subsequent resistance, while Republicans cruise on Trump’s approval and media popularity.
5. Trump’s Pursuit of Retribution: A Possibility?
Despite his recent statements on “Meet the Press” about moving forward, Trump’s actions indicate potential retribution. This is evident in his legal action against ABC News and an Iowa pollster. Will his congressional allies use their authority to settle his scores?
