TL/DR –
The Florida Bar has clarified that there is no investigation underway against Lindsey Halligan, a former Justice Department attorney and Trump loyalist, contradicting an earlier statement. The watchdog group Campaign for Accountability had filed a complaint against Halligan, accusing her of ethical violations including falsely claiming to be a U.S. attorney. While the Florida Bar did receive the complaint, it only opened a “monitoring file” and did not launch an official investigation.
The Florida Bar Refutes Investigation Claims Against Lindsey Halligan
Contrary to earlier reports, the Florida Bar confirmed on Friday that it is not conducting an investigation into the conduct of former Justice Department attorney Lindsey Halligan.
Previously, in response to a request for a probe into Halligan’s tenure during the Trump administration, a Florida Bar official had indicated the presence of an ongoing investigation.
However, following media reports, the Florida Bar clarified that while there is a “monitoring file,” no formal investigation into Halligan’s actions was in place.
The Florida Bar received a complaint against Halligan and is monitoring the ongoing legal proceedings related to it, following standard practice.
The complaint originated from the Campaign for Accountability, a nonprofit watchdog group. They claimed that Halligan committed ethical violations by falsely presenting herself as a U.S. attorney.
Halligan, a Trump loyalist with no prior prosecutorial experience, led failed cases against former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James. She stepped down from her role as interim U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia in January after a judge accused her of posing as the district’s top federal prosecutor.
The watchdog group filed complaints with both the Florida and Virginia bars in November and followed up with the Florida Bar last month.
Former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi dismissed the earlier reports of an investigation as “fake news” and defended Halligan’s conduct in a post on X.
Halligan responded to the Florida Bar’s clarification by asking for an apology from NBC News. She also shared a screenshot of a Trump post on Truth Social, reinforcing Bondi’s defense of her conduct.
