Florida Governor Labels CAIR and Muslim Brotherhood as ‘Foreign Terrorist Organizations’

TL/DR –

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has labelled the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the Muslim Brotherhood as “foreign terrorist organizations”. The order seeks to prevent these groups and their supporters from receiving funding, contracts, and employment from Florida state agencies. CAIR has declared its intention to sue the governor over this directive, which it described as “unconstitutional” and “defamatory”.

Florida Gov. Designates CAIR and Muslim Brotherhood as “Foreign Terrorist Organization”

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis designated the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a leading Muslim civil rights group in America, and the Muslim Brotherhood as “foreign terrorist organizations” Monday. This move follows a similar step by Texas last month, according to an executive order DeSantis posted on social media site X.

Despite these declarations, neither CAIR nor the Muslim Brotherhood are internationally recognized as terrorist organizations by the U.S. government. The executive order instructs Florida agencies to prevent these groups and their supporters from receiving contracts, employment, and funds from state executive or cabinet agencies.

In response to what they term an “unconstitutional” and “defamatory” proclamation, CAIR and its Florida branch plan to sue DeSantis. CAIR, founded in 1994 with 25 U.S. chapters, also requested a federal judge to invalidate Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s similar proclamation last month, citing it as a breach of the U.S. Constitution and unsupported by Texas law.

The Muslim Brotherhood, an organization established nearly a century ago in Egypt, has branches worldwide. It states that it abandoned violence years ago and seeks to establish Islamic rule through democratic elections and peaceful means. Critics, including various autocratic Middle Eastern governments, view it as a threat.
