House Oversight Committee Delays Ghislaine Maxwell’s Deposition Pending Supreme Court Review

TL/DR –

The chair of the House Oversight Committee, Republican Rep. James Comer, has agreed to postpone Ghislaine Maxwell’s deposition until after the Supreme Court reviews her appeal. Maxwell, a convicted sex offender and associate of Jeffrey Epstein, is serving a 20-year sentence and challenging her conviction, arguing she was covered by a non-prosecution deal offered to Epstein almost two decades ago. The Supreme Court will decide in September whether to take up Maxwell’s case, and Comer has stated that her deposition can take place afterward.

Ghislaine Maxwell’s Deposition Delayed Pending Supreme Court Appeal

As reported by the House Oversight Committee chair on Friday, convicted sex offender Ghislaine Maxwell’s deposition is to be postponed until the Supreme Court reviews her appeal. Maxwell, a longtime associate of Jeffrey Epstein, was found guilty in 2021 on five federal counts related to sex trafficking.

Maxwell was summoned last week by the Oversight Committee, led by Republican Rep. James Comer of Kentucky, in response to bipartisan scrutiny of the Epstein case’s handling by the Trump administration.

In line with a letter to Maxwell, Comer confirmed the committee will postpone the Aug. 11 deposition while the Supreme Court considers her appeal. Meanwhile, Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year prison term and is challenging her conviction, citing a previous non-prosecution agreement involving Epstein.

David Oscar Markus, Maxwell’s attorney, informed the committee his client will plead the Fifth at her deposition unless granted immunity or pardoned by President Trump. However, the committee has rejected her immunity request.

Recently, Maxwell was moved from a Florida low-security prison to a smaller, Texas minimum-security all-female facility. The relocation has caused outrage among some Epstein and Maxwell accusers.

The Justice Department and FBI’s review of the Epstein case has triggered weeks of fallout for the Trump administration. The administration has responded by appealing to judges to unseal grand jury transcripts from Maxwell’s and Epstein’s criminal cases.
