Indiana Republicans Outraise Democrats in 2024 Third Quarter Finance Reports

TL/DR –

In Q3 2024, Indiana’s Republican statewide candidates raised more campaign funds than their Democratic counterparts, with gubernatorial nominee Mike Braun raising nearly $3.2 million, compared to the Democrats’ Jennifer McCormick’s $1.2 million. However, Democrats in the governor’s and attorney general’s races recorded more individual donations in the period from July 1 to September 30. The major donations to Braun’s campaign came from political action committees (PACs) and major healthcare players, while McCormick’s support came primarily from educators, unions, and fellow Democrats.

Indiana Campaign Finance Reports Q3 2024: Republicans Outpace Democrats

During Q3 of 2024, Indiana’s Republican candidates topped their Democrat counterparts in statewide campaign fundraising, according to the reports filed with the Indiana Secretary of State’s office. Notably, Democrats in the gubernatorial and attorney general races reported more individual donations during July to September 2024.

Republican governor nominee Mike Braun, after a fiercely contested and expensive primary, gathered almost $3.2 million in the period. This significantly outperformed Jennifer McCormick, the Democratic nominee, who raised nearly $1.2 million.

Braun began with $1.7 million and spent nearly $3.6 million, ending with roughly $1.3 million. He reported 758 individual contributions (some from repeat donors) totaling $1.2 million. In comparison, McCormick noted 3,977 donations (including some repeat donors) accounting for $767,403.

Major contributors to Braun included political action committees (PACs) and significant healthcare players like Cigna. Totaling at $1.4 million, these contributions played a significant role. Braun, a sitting U.S. senator, has targeted high healthcare costs as a key part of his campaign.

McCormick, a former teacher and superintendent of public instruction, amassed donations from teacher unions, other Democrats, and unions, resulting in a total funding of $318,200. She started with over $700,000, spent nearly $1.6 million, and ended with just under $500,000.

The reported finances don’t include latest contributions from groups like the Republican Governors Association and the Democratic Governors Association. Both have invested more following polls that place McCormick close to Braun.

Attorney General Election Fundraising

In the fundraising battle for Attorney General, incumbent Todd Rokita maintained a strong lead over his Democratic opponent. Starting with $1.3 million, he raised another $1 million, spent $336,000, and ended with over $2 million. Notable donors included Tyson Foods, 1-800 Contacts, Inc. and Old National Bank, and PACs contributed another $291,000.

However, challenger Wells registered more individual and small-dollar donors than Rokita, amounting to nearly $339,000. Her total fundraising for the quarter was over $455,000. She began the period with less than $98,000, spent roughly $174,000, and finished the period with nearly $540,000.
