TL/DR –
Former National Security Adviser under President Trump, John R. Bolton, has stated that he will not be voting for Trump or Biden in the upcoming election, but will be giving his vote to former Vice President Dick Cheney. This is the same choice he made in the 2020 elections. Bolton, who has been highly critical of Trump in the past and even published a critical memoir about his dealings with the president, described Cheney as a “principled Reaganite conservative” and stated that he would do a much better job than either Trump or Biden.
John Bolton Voting for Dick Cheney, Not Former Boss Donald Trump
Former national security adviser John R. Bolton, who disowned ex-President Donald Trump, announced his support for former Vice President Dick Cheney in the coming November elections. Bolton, who served under multiple Republican administrations, revealed his presidential preference on CNN, repeating his choice from the 2020 elections.
“I voted for Dick Cheney and I’ll vote for him again this November,” said Bolton, lauding Cheney as a “principled Reaganite conservative”. Bolton worked with Cheney during President George W. Bush’s tenure, including as UN ambassador. At 83, Cheney is slightly older than current President Biden (81) and considerably older than Trump (77).
Bolton dismissed concerns about Cheney’s age, saying, “Age doesn’t disqualify him. He’d do an immensely better job than either Trump or Biden.” In 2020, Bolton published a tell-all memoir painting Trump as uninformed and reckless. An updated edition warned against a potential vindictive second Trump presidency.
Trump has continually derided Bolton, calling him a “wacko” and a “boring fool who only wanted to go to war” in a 2020 social media post. When asked if he might support Liz Cheney, Dick’s daughter and ex-House member from Wyoming, Bolton said, “I like Liz a lot. Maybe someday she’ll get my write-in vote, but right now I’ll stick with her father.”
Bolton is part of a group of former Trump administration officials refusing to support the former President, including former defense secretary Mark Esper and ex-vice president Mike Pence, who told Fox News that he “could not in good conscience” endorse Trump. Nevertheless, Pence noted that he “would never vote for Joe Biden.”
