TL/DR –
A US federal judge has indicated she may reopen a case involving former president Donald Trump, related to the creation of a controversial $1.776 billion “anti-weaponization fund” by the Justice Department. The decision follows allegations of “deception” and “fraud” from retired federal judges, who claim that the case was dismissed to avoid legal scrutiny. The case emerged after Trump sued the Internal Revenue Service for allegedly leaking his tax returns, leading to the dismissal of the case by Judge Kathleen Williams at the request of Trump and the Justice Department, alongside the creation of a settlement fund for victims of government “weaponization.”
US Judge May Reopen Trump’s Case Against His Own Government
On Friday, a federal judge indicated she might reopen President Trump’s legal case against his government, which resulted in the controversial $1.776 billion “anti-weaponization fund”. US Judge Kathleen Williams ordered the president’s lawyers to respond to allegations of “fraud”, made by dozens of retired federal judges who urged her to reinvestigate the case.
Williams’ cited “grievous allegations” of potential deception and judicial scrutiny avoidance in the dismissal of the case. She demanded Trump’s legal team reply to these claims and address whether the case should be reopened by June 12. This presents another obstacle for the “anti-weaponization fund”, after a separate lawsuit led to another judge halting the Justice Department’s progress on the fund.
The case first appeared on Williams’ desk when Trump sued the IRS for allegedly leaking his tax returns. The suit was dismissed at the president’s request but shortly after, the Justice Department announced a $1.776 billion fund to compensate alleged victims of government “weaponization”. The government also agreed to withhold action against Trump regarding old tax returns.
35 former federal judges requested Williams to overturn her dismissal and reopen the case, citing potential fraud and collusion. Williams has the authority to probe “serious misconduct”, including frivolous lawsuits filed with ulterior motives, and impose necessary penalties.
Both the Justice Department and a spokesperson for Mr. Trump’s legal team have not offered immediate comments on this development.
