Kamala Harris Accuses Trump of ‘Playing Politics’ With Disaster Relief

TL/DR –

US Vice President Kamala Harris has accused Donald Trump of politicizing disaster relief efforts in the wake of Hurricanes Helene and Milton. Trump has been spreading disinformation, including false claims that the government is withholding aid from Republican areas and diverting it to illegal immigrants. As the hurricanes could impact the upcoming presidential election, Harris and other leaders have called for an apolitical response to the crises.

Kamala Harris Accuses Donald Trump of ‘Playing Politics’ Over Hurricanes

Kamala Harris has criticised Donald Trump for exploiting Hurricanes Helene and Milton for political gains. Trump has been accused of spreading misinformation as he seeks advantage in the upcoming presidential election.

The VP’s remarks come as the two devastating storms, which have inflicted significant damage on various southern states, threaten to influence the forthcoming presidential race.

While answering queries about the federal government’s response to the hurricanes at a town hall meeting organized by Univision, Harris targeted Trump, insisting leaders should recognize the dignity of those affected.

“This crisis is not a time for people to play politics,” Harris stated during her campaign in the swing state of Nevada on Thursday.

Harris’s comments came after a rigorous attack on Trump by Joe Biden, who accused Trump of spreading “outright lies”. Trump has been heavily criticising Biden and Harris, accusing them of purposely engineering an inadequate response to Hurricane Helene in Republican voting areas.

Harris has temporarily halted her campaign trail to join White House conferences and meet the Federal Emergency Management Agency(FEMA) staff in response to the hurricanes. However, Democrats are worried that this might affect her campaign as the election approaches.

Deanne Criswell, FEMA’s director, has termed the surge of disinformation and conspiracy theories as “absolutely the worst I have ever seen” and cautioned that it is obstructing relief efforts.

As the election race becomes more competitive, Trump has paid particular focus on North Carolina, where the two candidates are neck-and-neck. Despite some Republican politicians condemning the spread of misinformation, most have refrained from naming Trump.

Harris also expressed her disappointment with CNN on Wednesday. She stated that it is dangerous for leaders to mislead desperate people and preventing them from receiving the aid they need.
