Mamdani Gets Sanders, Ocasio-Cortez Support in NY Mayoral Bid vs Trump

TL/DR –

Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic nominee for New York mayor, has framed his election as a fight against President Donald Trump and his administration. Backed by Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Mamdani rallied his supporters at a Queens rally, attended by thousands of people, based on a campaign of freezing rent, providing universal childcare, and free bus services among others. With less than ten days left until the election, polls show Mamdani to have a 10 to 20-point advantage over former governor, Andrew Cuomo, who is running as an independent in the general election.

NYC Mayoral Candidate Zohran Mamdani Rallies with Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez

At a lively Queens rally on Sunday, NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, along with supporters Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, framed his campaign as a challenge against President Donald Trump and his administration.

Speakers highlighted that Mamdani’s election would serve as the first move in reclaiming the country from Trump and his associates.

Ocasio-Cortez stated that electing Mamdani would send a potent message to Trump and that the opposition Mamdani faces mirrors national issues.

She reminded the crowd that there will be a day after Trump’s presidency.

Mamdani, alongside Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez, rallied supporters as early voting for the mayoral race started. The rally, titled “New York Is Not For Sale,” echoes Sanders’ previous campaign messages.

Former governor Andrew Cuomo is also running as an independent in the general election.

Mamdani proposed ending ineffective government and creating a government ambitious enough to battle adversaries.

Polls have shown Mamdani leading over Cuomo with a 10-20 point advantage in a three-way race, including Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa. Cuomo recently received an endorsement from NYC Mayor Eric Adams.

Democratic Support for Mamdani

Certain Democratic leaders have been hesitant to back Mamdani, an ex-activist for Democratic Socialists of America. However, Gov. Kathy Hochul and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries endorsed him last month.

Hochul encouraged the crowd to take their passion into the polls, highlighting the importance of keeping democratic control.

Trump has attempted to influence the race, criticizing Mamdani as a “communist” and threatening to retract federal funds from the city if Mamdani wins.

Controversial Remarks on Mamdani

The latest in the competitive mayoral race saw Mamdani condemning “racist, baseless” attacks on his Muslim faith. Mamdani would be the first Muslim mayor in NYC history.

Mamdani expressed that no amount of redirection is sufficient to distract from his faith. Cuomo accused Mamdani of creating tension with various communities.

At Sunday’s rally, NYC Comptroller Brad Lander assured that Mamdani would work to keep all New Yorkers safe and denounced anti-Islamic sentiment Mamdani has faced recently.

Sanders closed saying that a victory in New York would inspire people throughout the country and the world.
