Republican Vivek Ramaswamy is facing opposition from both Democrats and Republicans for his controversial ad against his Ohio gubernatorial race opponent, Amy Acton, in which Acton’s estranged mother calls her a “liar”. The ad topic touches on Acton’s past of sexual abuse by her mother’s husband, which Acton has publicly discussed. Meanwhile, Black voters are playing an important role in Senate races in Texas and Michigan, with both Republican and Democratic candidates working to secure their votes.

Impact of Ramaswamy’s ad on Ohio’s GOP

Analysis by Jonathan Allen

Republican Vivek Ramaswamy’s campaign for Ohio governor trails after a controversial ad featuring his opponent’s estranged mother.

The ad, in which Donna Arthur labels her daughter, Democratic gubernatorial nominee Amy Acton, as a “liar,” has caused an uproar due to Acton’s past disclosure of childhood sexual abuse by her mother’s husband.

This political attack ignited criticism from Democrats and distanced many Republicans, including Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and Senator John Husted, R-Ohio.

DeWine found the ad “deeply troubling,” and urged Ramaswamy to retract it.

Yet, some GOP members defended Ramaswamy. VP JD Vance told Republicans to quit complaining about the ad, while President Donald Trump praised the ad in a Truth Social post.

Although most candidates seek unity within their party, Ramaswamy has achieved the contrary.

Ramaswamy’s controversial move has led to mixed predictions about the race’s outcome.

Ramaswamy’s team believes the ad could close the gap, despite its counterintuitive nature.

Most strategists view the ad as a risky gamble, posing potential risks to Husted and other Republicans on the ticket.

Influence of Black voters in the Senate race

Senate candidates are targeting Black voters, who could sway the chamber’s control. In Michigan, Ex-Rep. Mike Rogers is making a late push for Black voters in Detroit, aiming to overcome his opponent Abdul El-Sayed’s underperformance and loss in the city’s Democratic primary. Read more →

Amid potential doubts about El-Sayed, Rogers has interacted with Black voters in Detroit bars and shared photos during his campaign.

Former President Barack Obama will rally in Detroit for El-Sayed, despite past criticisms from El-Sayed about Obama’s limited change effect.

Rogers’ outreach has impressed some Democrats, while others accuse him of pandering.

In Texas, state Rep. James Talarico seeks Black voters’ support for a Democratic Senate victory, Natasha Korecki reports.

At a recent gathering, Rep. Jasmine Crockett, a primary loser to Talarico, praised him as “our amazing Senate nominee” and urged support for him.
