TL/DR –
House Speaker Mike Johnson has announced the creation of a new subcommittee to investigate the events before and after January 6, 2021. The subcommittee’s mission is to uncover the full truth that is owed to the American people, according to Johnson. The committee will be chaired by Rep. Barry Loudermilk and it will fall under the jurisdiction of the House Judiciary Committee chaired by Rep. Jim Jordan.
House Republicans Announce New Subcommittee to Investigate Jan. 6 Events
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., proclaimed the formation of a new select subcommittee on Wednesday. This subcommittee’s purpose is to examine events before and after Jan. 6, 2021. Johnson mentions the subcommittee’s mission is to reveal the full truth to the American people.
Johson didn’t elaborate on the false claims allegedly made by the original select committee. Rep. Barry Loudermilk, R-Ga., will preside over the new subcommittee under the House Judiciary Committee, chaired by Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio.
The subcommittee’s chair, Loudermilk, had given a tour of the Capitol to people the day prior to the insurrection. Among the tour members was a man who was later caught on video making threats against top Democratic lawmakers during the attack.
The individual making threats, Trevor Hallgren, photographed hallways and staircases during Loudermilk’s tour, as mentioned in the final report by the Jan. 6 select committee. In a statement, Loudermilk attributed the events at the Capitol to a series of intelligence, security, and leadership failures.
The initial Jan. 6 committee investigated the Capitol attack as a nearly two-year bipartisan inquiry when Democrats controlled the House. Before leaving office, Joe Biden issued pre-emptive pardons to all lawmakers and staff members who served on the committee.
As chair of the House Administration Committee’s Subcommittee on Oversight, Loudermilk suggested that the FBI should investigate Liz Cheney for her role on the select committee, claiming she likely broke numerous federal laws.
Trump pardoned nearly all Jan. 6 defendants on Monday, his second term’s first day. Republicans have downplayed the events of Jan. 6, some falsely suggesting that it was actually members of the group antifa who attacked the Capitol. The announcement of the subcommittee came after Johnson endorsed Trump’s pardons of Jan. 6 rioters.
“We’re not looking backward, we’re looking forward,” Johnson told reporters Wednesday.
