Newcomers to politics, property management consultant, Eugene Green III, and local attorney, Ed. T. Murray, are competing for the House District 97 seat this winter. This key race will help shape New Orleans’ Democratic delegation.
Both are sons of New Orleans politicians and are running for a state Legislature seat following the resignation of former Rep. Matthew Willard. The election is slated for Feb. 7 with early voting from Jan. 24 to Jan. 31.
Green
Green is committed to ensuring New Orleans gets its fair share of state resources, especially given the city’s burden of providing services for state-owned entities such as the Caesar’s Superdome. He also expressed concerns about rising homeowners insurance costs and plans to secure more funding for the state-administered fortified roof program.
The son of sitting District D City Councilmember, Eugene Green Jr., Green intends to foster a collaborative relationship between Mayor Helena Moreno’s administration and the state. He raised approximately $13,000 for his campaign and had $45,000 remaining at the end of the most recent campaign finance reporting period.
Murray
Murray, a partner at Chehardy Sherman Williams law firm, is focusing his campaign on making New Orleans more affordable due to escalating costs of food, utilities, and housing. He is particularly concerned about rising homeowners insurance costs, which he believes are driving young families out of the city.
Murray also plans to address New Orleans’ chronic blight issues and aims to reduce the quantity of abandoned and aging buildings. He believes in the untapped potential of New Orleans, especially District 97. Campaign finance records show Murray raised nearly $50,000 and had roughly $53,000 left at the close of the reporting period.
