Stefanos Kasselakis Leaves SYRIZA, Begins New Political Movement in Athens

TL/DR –

Stefanos Kasselakis, former leader of SYRIZA, has announced the creation of a new political movement in Athens. This follows his recent departure from SYRIZA, which was prompted by his exclusion from an upcoming leadership race. Kasselakis has yet to name the new party, but suggests the name will be decided by a popular vote.

Former SYRIZA leader Stefanos Kasselakis announced a new political movement after leaving the party. Speaking to a crowd in Tavros, southern Athens, Kasselakis declared, “Today a movement for democracy, citizens, and progress is born.”

“This movement is from society, for society,” he continued, wishing “good luck” to remaining SYRIZA members. The name of the party will be decided by a popular vote, with Kasselakis stating, “The party will be yours, and I will be your servant.”

Kasselakis’ exit from SYRIZA followed his exclusion from the leadership race, less than 14 months after being elected party leader. His departure, along with four SYRIZA MPs, puts the party’s status as the official opposition in jeopardy.
