These Are Familiar Trump Tactics: Derailing Discussion and Introducing Drugs?

TL/DR –

Former President Donald J. Trump is reportedly circulating various contradictory and unproven ideas on his social media platforms, including an allegation that President Biden is taking performance-enhancing drugs ahead of their debate. In a turn of events, Trump has also recently praised Biden as a “worthy debater”, contrasting his earlier stance where he suggested that Biden was the worst debater he had faced. Biden’s advisors consider Trump’s actions as an attempt to appeal to his base and alter the expectations ahead of the debate, while Trump’s campaign has insisted that he will participate in the debate, irrespective of whether drug tests are conducted or not.

Trump Suggests Pre-Debate Drug Test for Biden Amid Contradictory Accusations

Former President Donald J. Trump’s social media has become a hotbed of contradictory allegations and unproven ideas, especially with the upcoming presidential debate. Mr. Trump’s main contention is that President Biden is using performance-enhancing drugs ahead of the debate, prompting him to demand a drug test on Monday.

Just days before, Mr. Trump had suggested that Biden would spend most of his debate preparations sleeping, even calling him “the WORST debater I have ever faced. He can’t put two sentences together!”. However, now he considers Biden a “worthy debater”, citing his previous performance against Paul Ryan in 2012. The Trump campaign has also accused the debate moderators, two veteran CNN journalists, of bias, claiming biased coverage against Mr. Trump.

Biden’s advisers see these outbursts as an attempt by Trump to rattle his base and manipulate the narrative before a crucial event. This is not unprecedented; Trump had previously claimed Biden was using performance-enhancing drugs in 2020 and also accused Hillary Clinton of the same in 2016. He also consistently claimed that the elections were rigged.

Biden’s campaign retorts with, “Donald Trump is so scared of being held accountable for his toxic agenda of attacking reproductive freedom and cutting Social Security that he and his allies are resorting to desperate, obviously false lies,” as per spokeswoman Lauren Hitt. Biden has been preparing rigorously for the debate at Camp David while Trump prefers to refine his message at his rallies.

Biden’s campaign proposed early debates with minimal audience to provide a clear comparison between both candidates. Drug testing was never a requirement, and both candidates agreed to the terms. Despite Trump’s repeated attacks on the debate protocol, his spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt confirmed that Trump would attend the debate, even without drug tests, as a promise to the American people.
