TL/DR –
Charlie Kirk, right-wing US activist and founder of Turning Point USA, was memorialized at a massive service in Arizona following his murder. High-profile figures such as President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other Republicans spoke at the event, with Trump labeling Kirk an “American martyr.” Kirk’s death has been controversial due to his divisive stances, including advocating for harsh measures against immigrants at the US-Mexico border and denying global warming, but he was seen as a significant figure in the Trump movement and conservative causes.
Over tens of thousands gathered at the Arizona-dedicated Charlie Kirk memorial service. Kirk, a prominent right-wing activist and founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot earlier this month.
The memorial, held at the over 63,000 seat State Farm Stadium in Glendale on Sunday, featured speeches from President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other Republican figures. The event, named “Building a Legacy: Remembering Charlie Kirk”, was classified as of “the highest national significance” by the Department of Homeland Security due to both VIP attendance and existing political tension.
In his address, Trump referred to Kirk as an “American martyr”. “He’s a martyr now for America’s freedom,” Trump declared. “I know I speak for everyone here today when I say that none of us will ever forget Charlie. And neither now will history.”
Noteworthy attendees included Elon Musk, who recently resigned from his position in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). He was seen sitting next to Trump during the service. Trump Jr, the president’s son, and Jack Posobiec, a right-wing influencer, also paid tribute to Kirk’s legacy.
Kirk, known for his polarizing views and pivotal role in conservative youth engagement, was only 31 when he was killed during a university event in Utah. A 22-year-old suspect is currently facing murder charges for Kirk’s death, citing he had had “enough of his [Kirk’s] hate”.
Various political figures have voiced concern over the way Trump is leveraging Kirk’s murder, claiming it’s a result of “left-wing extremism”, fuelling an already divided political climate.
Turning Point USA, established by Kirk in his late teens, has become one of the largest right-wing groups in the US, exerting significant influence across educational institutions and social media platforms. Kirk was also a fervent supporter of Israel, garnering praise from Israeli leaders posthumously.
