Tim Scott’s Fundraiser Attracts Donors Resistant to Trump as VP Contest Intensifies

TL/DR –

Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, a potential running mate for Donald Trump, is hosting a fundraising event in Washington D.C. with uncommitted Republican donors. The gathering, taking place next month, is pitched as a meeting of Great Opportunity Policy, a tax-exempt group supporting Scott’s political agenda. The event could boost Scott’s chances of being selected as Trump’s vice presidential candidate by demonstrating his appeal to centrist donors and the potential financial resources he could bring to Trump’s campaign.

South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, a top potential running mate for Donald Trump, will host a gathering in Washington next month. This event, aimed at uncommitted Republican donors, will coincide with Trump’s VP search ramping up.

The June 19 private event, part of Great Opportunity Policy supporting Scott’s political agenda, is also a fundraiser. A financial boost could enhance Scott’s chances with Trump, who is seeking a VP who can help raise campaign funds.

The event could demonstrate that Scott is a preferred political figure for centrist donors, potentially expanding Trump’s financial resources. Big names in the donor community, including Marc Andreessen, Kenneth Griffin, and others will be featured at the event.

Trump’s campaign is in need of financial support, with President Biden’s fundraising operation seen as a potential threat. Legal bills from four criminal cases have also drained funds, depleting about $50 million from his political action committee last year.

Trump has responded with intensified fundraising efforts, a turn from his 2016 campaign, where he portrayed political donors negatively. At a private fundraiser at his Mar-a-Lago club, he told donors they wouldn’t get a picture with him if they didn’t donate enough.

Scott, the Senate’s only Black Republican, is active in helping Trump raise money, organizing a major fundraiser before an important presidential primary in his home state this year.

Scott will attend a Manhattan fundraiser later this month, hosted by billionaires, financial executives and long-time Republican donors. The Washington policy gathering hosted by Scott, seeking up to $250,000 from attendees, will focus on antisemitism on college campuses and financial issues.

Scott stated that the topics aim to “expand opportunity and access to the American dream”, noting that “for many Americans, prosperity is slipping out of reach”.
