Tom Barrack, US Special Envoy for Syria, is stepping down from his official position but will remain instrumental in shaping US policy for Syria and Iraq, announced Marco Rubio, US Secretary of State.
Barrack, a close ally of President Donald Trump, has been the key US envoy to Syria since May 2025 and concurrently served as the US ambassador to Turkiye.

“Barrack’s title has expired, but his pivotal role hasn’t changed. He continues to be the lead for Syria, Iraq, and Turkiye, ensuring continuity,” commented Nanar Hawach, a senior Syria analyst at the International Crisis Group.
In his yearlong tenure as Syria envoy, Barrack significantly influenced US policy by advocating for relaxed economic sanctions on Damascus and coordinating counter-Islamic State operations with regional allies. However, his connections to Emirati sovereign funds raised queries about Gulf financial influence over US policy.
Barrack’s Syria tenure drew considerable attention, with his mediation of a ceasefire pact between Damascus and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) criticised by the Kurdish leadership. His comments in Lebanon and controversial public assertions about Middle East governance styles fuelled further backlash.
A successor for the Syria envoy position has not been announced by State Department officials.
