Top Official Resigns Over Security Clearance Scandal, UK PM Starmer Promises Full Disclosure

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has expressed his anger over not being informed of Peter Mandelson’s failed security vetting prior to his Washington envoy appointment. The PM now faces renewed calls for resignation.

Starmer claims he was unaware of the Foreign Office’s decision to disregard security officials’ recommendation against Mandelson’s appointment. Mandelson, a Labour Party grandee, was dismissed in September due to connections with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Vowing to deliver all pertinent facts to Parliament on Monday, Starmer declared the Foreign Office’s failure to inform him as “unforgivable”.

Starmer stated he learned about the mishandled vetting process just before The Guardian published the story on Thursday, coinciding with the Foreign Office’s top civil servant Olly Robbins’ dismissal.

Darren Jones, the PM’s chief secretary, called the Foreign Office’s decision to ignore recommendations against Mandelson’s appointment “astonishing”. The security assessment was conducted by UK Security Vetting, and typically includes sensitive personal information, such as financial background and personal relationships.

Kemi Badenoch, Opposition Conservative Party leader, criticised Starmer’s claim of ignorance as “completely preposterous”, citing it as a reason for Starmer’s resignation.

Despite the controversy, Starmer insisted proper procedures were followed in Mandelson’s appointment in December 2024. Mandelson served seven months before being dismissed due to new revelations about his relationship with Epstein.

A police investigation is underway regarding allegations of Mandelson’s misconduct in office, including leaking sensitive documents to Epstein during the 2008 financial crisis.
