Treasury Sec. Bessent Defends US Strikes on Iran; Trump Threatens Power Plants

TL/DR –

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended recent military strikes on Iran’s infrastructure carried out jointly by the US and Israel. President Donald Trump has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Iranian leadership to open the Strait of Hormuz or face military strikes on their power plants. Bessent also justified the Treasury’s decision to ease certain sanctions on Iran, allowing the sale of stranded Iranian oil, in order to mitigate rising energy costs.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended the recent military actions against Iran’s infrastructure, initiated by the U.S. and Israel. He stated that “sometimes you have to escalate to de-escalate,” in response to the joint strikes that began in February.

President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that Iranian leaders are given 48 hours to open the Strait of Hormuz. He threatened military strikes, specifically on their power plants, if they fail to comply.

According to Bessent, such rhetoric is “the only language the Iranians understand.” Iran’s military command headquarters warned of retaliation if U.S. strikes on their oil infrastructure occur.

As per Col. Ebrahim Zolfaqari, if Iran’s fuel and energy infrastructure is targeted, they will strike back at the U.S.’s energy, information technology systems, and desalination infrastructure.

Trump also revealed plans with international allies to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime passageway for oil tankers. This has been closed since the war started, causing global surge in oil prices and increasing gas prices in the U.S.

The Treasury Secretary ambiguously stated that all options, including deploying U.S. troops to secure Kharg Island, are on the table. Kharg Island is a vital hub for Iran’s oil production, which was partially destroyed by the U.S. military.

Last week, Trump considered sending U.S. troops to Kharg Island to safeguard oil facilities. The island is located about 15 miles from mainland Iran.

To manage rising energy costs, the Treasury Department eased certain sanctions on Iran, allowing the sale of Iranian oil currently stranded at sea. Although it might boost Iran’s economy during the war, Bessent stated that the move was always planned as a contingency, and it would significantly help Asian allies such as Japan, Korea, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

Senator Chris Murphy criticized the Bessent’s approach, saying, “This administration has totally lost touch with reality. This war is spinning out of control. Prices are spiking for millions of Americans.”
