President-elect has nominated Linda McMahon for secretary of Department of Education. McMahon, former WWE CEO and supporter of Trump’s 2016 campaign, also chaired America First Action, a pro-Trump super PAC.

As Secretary of Education, McMahon will work to expand ‘choice’ throughout America, empowering parents to make educational decisions for their families, as mentioned by Trump on Truth Social.

While McMahon’s education experience is limited, she served on the Connecticut Board of Education for a year but left under allegations of misrepresenting her education qualifications. She also served on the board of trustees for Sacred Heart University in Connecticut.

McMahon has expressed support for charter schools and private school vouchers. Critics argue that these programs, funded by tax dollars, lack regulation and don’t cater to children with disabilities.

If confirmed, McMahon might be tasked with dissolving the Department of Education, a promise made by Trump on the campaign trail. Education advocates have criticised her nomination.

National Education Association President Becky Pringle criticised the nomination, stating McMahon’s only mission is to eliminate public school funding and divert it to private schools. Pringle also mentioned the public’s rejection of school vouchers in states like Colorado, Kentucky and Nevada. Comparing McMahon to Trump’s first-term education secretary, Betsy DeVos, Pringle urged the Senate to reject the nomination.
