The educational landscape at Hallandale Magnet High School is buzzing with excitement as students gear up for the debut of the AP Financial Literacy Course. This innovative course has been introduced this academic year by College Board and Intuit for Education.

Financial Literacy: A Step Towards Real-World Experience

The course, officially named AP Business with Personal Finance, has garnered the enthusiasm of Marcia Notkin, the Business Education Teacher at Hallandale Magnet High School. “I’m thrilled about the opportunity of imparting students with real-world financial experiences. Savings, stock market investing – it’s all inclusive,” shares Notkin.

Expanding Educational Reach: Miami-Dade and Broward Counties

In its inaugural year, this course is being offered to over 15 schools in Miami-Dade County and seven in Broward County, with six of the Broward County schools only offering the course through their Career Technical Education pathway. Not only does this curriculum teach about finance, accounting, and investing, but it also guides students on creating a business plan, all while earning college credits.

Young Entrepreneurs in the Making

Students like junior Tariyah Knowles, who crochets custom items and has recently established her own LLC, are eager for the course. “I really need help with taxes. This course will help me understand how to manage taxes for my business,” confides Knowles.

Meanwhile, freshman Skylar Lees, who runs a pet sitting business, looks forward to expanding her enterprise. “I’m excited to learn about how to grow my business and generate more ideas in this class,” Skylar shares.

A Taste of the Future: Artificial Intelligence and More

Then there are students like Avenir Pigida, who has crafted an artificial intelligence homework helper to help busy students stay organized. “I’ll learn things such as market shares, trends, pie charts, and business strategies. This course will give me a head start for my future business endeavors,” Pigida explains.

Financial Literacy: A State-Wide Initiative

Florida is one of the 30 states that mandate high school students to take a financial literacy course. While this new AP course is being offered in numerous schools across South Florida this year, each school has different prerequisites for enrollment in the new AP class.
