U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.), Chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee, recently returned from the annual United Nations climate conference, COP28, in Dubai. He praised the significant climate strides the U.S. has made, highlighted by the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and the ratification of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol.
Serving on a Senate delegation led by Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Carper was joined by Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), Chris Coons (D-Del.), Ed Markey (D-Mass.), and Brian Schatz (D-Hawai’i).
Carper emphasized that as a major historic emitter, it is the U.S.’s duty to significantly reduce its emissions and set an example. He asserted, “COP28 was an opportunity to showcase our efforts in addressing climate change, especially in transportation and power sectors, while also supporting job creation. The U.S. remains committed to combating the climate crisis.”
He added, “Post-COP28, my main focus will be on the effective enforcement of our recent climate victories. I look forward to promoting bipartisan legislation to strengthen our nuclear sector, endorsing nominees who align with our aims and more. I will continue collaborating with the Biden Administration on furthering the U.S. climate agenda.”
At COP28, the Senators were briefed by U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry and State Department officials, and interacted with foreign delegations from Ukraine, the European Union, Japan, and more. Topics of discussion included infrastructure resiliency, global methane reductions, and clean trade and supply chains.
