Golden denies flip-flopping in first debate, urges record check

TL/DR –

U.S. Rep. Jared Golden is seeking reelection in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District and is facing Republican state Rep. Austin Theriault. In the first of three televised debates, the two discussed key issues such as the economy, immigration, the Second Amendment, reproductive rights and Maine’s fishing industry. Golden defended his bipartisan record and support for the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, while Theriault criticized the Act and emphasized the need for a reformed energy policy.

U.S. Rep. Jared Golden urged voters to consider his track record in the upcoming elections for Maine’s 2nd Congressional District. He faced off with Republican state Rep. Austin Theriault, who alleges Golden’s positions have shifted in office.

The first of three debates hosted by Bangor Daily News and WGME saw the candidates discuss economy, immigration, Second Amendment rights, reproductive rights, and notably, Maine’s fishing industry.

Golden defended his support of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, a controversial legislation attacked by Theriault for escalating costs for Americans and favoring the clean energy industry. Theriault pledges to bring clean, affordable energy online if elected.

Running for his fourth term, Golden justified his support for the Act citing its capacity to lower drug costs for seniors and increase oil and gas production. Theriault, proud of his origins from the more Democratic St. John Valley, seeks to represent all people, amid endorsement from former President Donald Trump.

Lobster fishing

Theriault critiqued the Inflation Reduction Act for hampering Maine’s lobster industry due to offshore wind promotion. Golden countered with his efforts to protect key lobster fishing areas from offshore wind development.

Theriault also vowed to address a disputed maritime border and seek more funding for the U.S. Coast Guard. Golden maintained that he has consistently supported such initiatives.

Reproductive rights

On reproductive rights, Golden backs reproductive freedom and an individual’s choice for abortion. Theriault believes voters in each state should decide, avoiding Golden’s query about a federal protection floor.

Presidential election

On presidential support, Golden declined to reveal his choice, seeking voters’ decision on his past performance. Theriault believes the Republican candidate will better serve the 2nd District, despite his reservations about Trump’s rhetoric and social media behavior.

Second Amendment rights

Addressing gun rights, Golden defends his change of stance to support an assault weapons ban post the Lewiston mass shooting. Theriault argues mental health care needs strengthening rather than affecting Second Amendment support.

Immigration

Theriault believes border security is paramount while advocating comprehensive immigration reforms. Golden cites his votes for U.S.-Mexico border wall funding and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement as proof of his record.

The next debates are slated for next week. Early voting in Maine commences on Oct. 7.
