‘Hoboken’s New Urban Forestry Division Accepts $1M Tree Grant in ’25

TL/DR –

The City of Hoboken will establish a Division of Urban Forestry in 2025, funded by a $1 million federal grant for tree planting and maintenance. The grant will support a five-year urban forestry initiative to expand and maintain Hoboken’s tree canopy, enhance stormwater management, and mitigate climate change, including the planting of 300 new and replacement trees, a green workforce initiative, and educational programming at local schools. The project directly benefits Hoboken neighborhoods that face disproportionate impacts from climate change and environmental inequities, and aligns with numerous plans for green building, environmental sustainability, and climate action.

Hoboken City to Establish Division of Urban Forestry with $1 million Federal Grant

In 2025, Hoboken City will establish a Division of Urban Forestry, utilizing a $1 million federal grant for tree planting and maintenance.

The grant aims to boost Hoboken’s sustainability efforts and improve residents’ lives by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and planting more trees, part of the city’s Climate Action Plan, Mayor Ravi Bhalla expressed.

This funding, from the Inflation Reduction Act and U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Urban & Community Forestry Program, will launch a comprehensive urban forestry project in Hoboken.

The five-year project aims to expand and maintain the city’s tree canopy, enhance stormwater management, and mitigate climate change. This includes planting 300 new trees in public spaces, a green workforce initiative for local youth and adults, and educational programs at local schools.

The project’s focus areas are Hoboken neighborhoods that face disproportionate impacts from climate change, flooding, and environmental inequities.

The initiative aims to combat the heat island effect, improve air and water quality, sequester carbon, and manage stormwater runoff. It aligns with key objectives in several environmental plans, including Hoboken’s 2017 Green Building and Environmental Sustainability Element of the Master Plan, the 2018 Hoboken Master Plan, The 2019 Hoboken Climate Action Plan, and New Jersey’s 2020 Forest Action Plan.

The Hoboken Department of Climate Action and Innovation will spearhead the project, collaborating with local organizations, residents, and experts.
