New York is the first state to distribute funds from the $8.8 billion Inflation Reduction Act, allowing homeowners and renters to receive energy efficiency rebates for green upgrades. Low- and middle-income homeowners can receive up to $14,000 per house for upgrades through the state’s EmPower+ program, with income eligibility depending on the household size and income. The state also plans to launch Home Efficiency Rebates with $159 million funding from the Inflation Reduction Act, providing eligible households up to $8,000 in additional rebates for measures reducing energy usage by at least 20%.
New York leads the way in distributing the $8.8 billion federal funds from the Inflation Reduction Act. This makes it the first state to do so, introducing energy efficiency rebates for homeowners and renters who upgrade or install insulation and heat pumps.
The Act enables low- and middle-income homeowners to receive up to $14,000 per house for green energy upgrades. This news was confirmed by U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and Governor Kathy Hochul.
Residents can apply for these rebates through the state’s EmPower+ program. This allows for monetary returns on a range of green upgrades. These include installation of air sealing, insulation, ventilation, heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, and electrical upgrades.
Eligibility for these rebates falls into two income tiers. For a Brooklyn-based family of four, low-income requires an annual income under $70,056 and middle-income between $70,056 and $124,4000. You can check the eligibility on the EmPower+ website income calculator.
Renters are also eligible for these green energy upgrading rebates.
As Governor Hochul stated, the state has secured $39.6 million in initial grand funding. New York aims to help residents save money on energy bills and lessen dependence on fossil fuels through these Inflation Reduction Act rebates.
Funded by the IRA, New York is implementing its Home Efficiency Rebates. With $159 million funding, eligible households could receive additional rebates up to $8,000 for reducing energy usage by at least 20%.
Secretary Granholm commented that New York is a model for other states as it propels the Home Energy Rebates program, delivering jobs, savings, and healthier homes.
In addition to this, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority offers other financing and rebate programs which homeowners can utilize alongside the federal IRA funds. For more details, click here.
