House GOP Deems EPA Methane Fee ‘Unworkable’

TL/DR –

Dozens of House Republicans are urging the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to revise its method of reducing methane emissions from fossil fuel operations. Led by Rep. August Pfluger, these Republicans, largely from energy-producing states, are calling the agency’s implementation of the Inflation Reduction Act’s methane fee “unworkable”. They specifically oppose two proposed rules to implement the Act’s mandates, asserting that the current proposal will lead to high fees without providing the intended relief or improving the accuracy of emissions reporting.

House Republicans Demand EPA Amend Methane Emission Reduction Plan

Numerous House Republicans urge the EPA to broadly revise its key plan to cut down methane emissions from fossil fuel operations. Rep. August Pfluger (R-Texas) spearheaded the appeal with 55 other House Republicans, primarily from energy-producing states towards EPA Administrator Michael Regan on Monday.

The letter they sent deemed the agency’s application of the Inflation Reduction Act’s so-called methane fee as “unworkable”. The Republicans take issues with two suggested rules carrying out the mandates of the Inflation Reduction Act – the ‘Waste Emissions Charge’ rule and a complementary rule under Supbart W of the Clean Air Act’s Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program.

“The current proposal will incur the highest fees, without delivering any intended relief or enhancing the precision of emissions reporting,” the lawmakers argued.
