Doug Lebda, LendingTree Founder and CEO, Passes Away
Doug Lebda, the founder and CEO of the game-changing financial services platform LendingTree, tragically died at 55 in an ATV accident. His pioneering work in transforming the financial landscape and his invaluable guidance to young entrepreneurs will continue to inspire.
In 1996, Lebda created LendingTree, originally known as CreditSource USA, in response to his own challenges navigating the mortgage process. His company revolutionized the industry by offering online loan comparison shopping, connecting users with a network of over 300 lenders for mortgages and personal loans. While LendingTree doesn’t directly provide loans, it helps consumers compare rates.
Doug Lebda’s Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
Just before his untimely death, Lebda shared some invaluable advice for budding entrepreneurs on “The Deal Ranch,” a finance and real estate podcast hosted by Matt Lutz. Here is a glimpse of the insights Lebda shared.
1. Maximize Your ‘Wet Feet’ Moments
According to Lebda, personal inconveniences, or “wet feet” moments, can spark entrepreneurial ideas. He cited his own frustrating experience of physically visiting different banks to compare mortgage rates for a condo as the inspiration behind LendingTree. He realized the need for a more streamlined system after observing the efficiency of automated trades based on natural gas price differences.
2. Validate Demand Cheaply
Before launching LendingTree, Lebda conducted affordable market research by spending $500 on Yahoo ads. He used the responses he received to model out what his customer acquisition cost would be, proving that LendingTree was a viable idea.
3. The Value of a Complementary Cofounder
Lebda emphasized the need for non-technical founders to partner with a strong technical counterpart. He attributed the success of LendingTree to his partnership with cofounder Jamey Bennett and CTO Rick Stiegler.
4. Automate the Drudgery
LendingTree leverages AI to automate the mundane aspects of work. Lebda’s belief was to automate the drudgery and dedicate more time to the joyous aspects of work. He used ChatGPT to read all his emails and highlight important tasks.
5. Flexible Leadership
For Lebda, leadership is not static but contextual, constantly changing according to the situation. He emphasized the importance of knowing when to dig in, when to let go, when you can add value, and when you can’t.
