On May 22, 2025, Senator Edward J. Markey, Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, and Senator Ron Wyden, alongside climate advocacy groups, criticized Republicans for opposing climate change mitigation efforts, including the revocation of the California Clean Air Act waivers and repeal of clean energy tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act.

Senator Markey, in a searing critique of Republicans, stated, “The repeal of the Clean Air Act waivers is another historic example of the lawlessness of today’s Republican party. Their reckless repeal of clean energy and environmental protection funding from the Inflation Reduction Act is a direct attack on clean air and clean energy. This will lead to more asthma, heart disease, early deaths, and cancer.”

Wyden added, “Republicans are raising Americans’ electrical bills, destroying thousands of good-paying jobs, and sacrificing our energy security. Their actions are an economic self-sabotage unprecedented in modern American times.”

Matthew Davis, League of Conservation Voters’ VP of Federal Policy, criticized the Republican party for attempting to block stronger clean air standards for vehicles. He stated, “This is the most anti-environmental bill in our nation’s history that will increase families’ energy costs. The Senate must stand against this anti-environmental billionaire tax scam.”

“Congress has chosen to deny states their rights to reduce pollution and protect public health, affecting low-income communities and people of color the most. We will continue to fight for a clean transportation sector,” said Yosef Robele, Federal Policy Manager, WE ACT for Environmental Justice.
