NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani Forms Business Advisory Council Amid Strained Relations

Zohran Mamdani, NYC Mayor, Invites 15 Business Executives to City Hall

In his latest move towards mending ties with the city’s business community, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is welcoming 15 business leaders to City Hall.

Mayor Mamdani Launches Business Advisory Council

On Thursday, Mayor Mamdani announced the establishment of a new Business Advisory Council. This body comprises prominent figures from diverse sectors, including finance, real estate, health care, technology, sports, and retail. The council aims to facilitate dialogue between the business community and the Mayor who, with his democratic socialist leanings, has often found himself at odds with the city’s executives. Council members include Hamdi Ulukaya, the founder and CEO of Chobani, Etsy CEO Kruti Patel Goyal, and Scott Rechler, RXR chairman, and CEO, among others.

Notable Absences from the Business Advisory Council

However, it’s worth noting that some of JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, American Express, BlackRock, Meta, and Alphabet’s current executives are missing from the council.

Reasons for Executive Absences

According to a report from the New York Times, several reasons might explain why some executives did not join the council. For instance, some could not commit the time, while others did not receive approval from their companies, and a few were concerned about the media attention the group would attract.

Function of the Business Advisory Council

The council, which is scheduled to meet quarterly with Mamdani and Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su, aims to advise City Hall on industries like finance, technology, real estate, entertainment, and health care. It will also guide the city’s talent pipeline, regulatory environment, and infrastructure matters.

Mamdani’s Pledge to NYC’s Business Community

In the statement released by the mayor’s office, Mamdani expressed his commitment to working with New York’s business leaders, stating, “The doors of City Hall are always open. I look forward to welcoming their experience and strategic guidance as we build a stronger, more dynamic economy.”

Members of the Business Advisory Council

In the latest attempt to foster a working relationship with the business community, Mamdani has managed to bring on board 15 executives from diverse sectors. However, the absence of current executives from some of the city’s largest financial and technology companies indicates a persisting divide.
