Private Sector Adds 38,000 Jobs in August, Below Economists’ Estimates

U.S. Economy Employment Growth Analysis

According to Vanguard senior economist Adam Schickling, after a strong employment growth in the U.S. during spring, a softer labor market has been observed this summer.

Private Sector Job Growth

In a recent report from the payroll processing firm ADP, it was revealed that private sector companies added 38,000 jobs in August, which was below economists’ predicted gain of 48,000. This is a significant decrease from the previous month’s revised 46,000 payrolls and marks the lowest figure since January.

Insights into Hiring Patterns

Nela Richardson, ADP’s Chief Economist, suggests that wage growth can be an insightful indicator of the current volatile hiring environment. She stresses the importance of “looking deeply into where pay growth is accelerating, where it’s slowing, and for whom”, as factors such as demographic change, persistent inflation, and the effects of AI on jobs has complicated predictable wage growth.

The Top Industries for Job Creation

According to the ADP report, the education and health services sector led the U.S. economy in job creation in August, adding 45,000 positions. This was followed by the leisure and hospitality sector, which added 16,000 jobs, and financial activities and other services sectors, each adding 6,000 jobs.

Declining Sectors

Manufacturing, however, is on the decline, losing 17,000 jobs in August, followed closely by professional and business services, which lost 16,000 jobs. Other sectors showing job losses include natural resources and mining, trade, transportation, and the information sector.

Growth in Large Businesses

In August, large businesses, defined as those with 500 or more employees, gained 34,000 jobs. Meanwhile, hiring for businesses with 50 to 499 employees was stagnant, while businesses with fewer than 50 employees gained 3,000 jobs.

Wage Growth

There has been a 4.4% increase in pay for employees who stayed in their roles from the prior year, while those who changed jobs saw wage growth accelerate to 7.3%.

Upcoming Nonfarm Payrolls Report

The ADP data is released ahead of the Labor Department’s nonfarm payrolls report, due on Friday, which can sometimes show notable differences. The upcoming report is expected to indicate an increase of 56,000 jobs, a significant improvement from July’s surprising loss of 23,000 reported jobs. The unemployment rate is expected to remain at 4.1%.
