Today, October 7, 2026, has been unanimously designated as Energy Efficiency Day by the U.S. Senate, as announced by Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH). This bipartisan resolution, which Shaheen lauded, comes in the face of continuous opposition from the Trump Administration against initiatives aimed at energy efficiency. Such initiatives are seen as vital in reducing expenses and promoting environmental and economic benefits through energy efficiency investments.
Senator Shaheen expressed, “Energy efficiency is one of the most effective tools we have to help Granite State families save money, support good-paying jobs and build a cleaner energy future.” She further emphasized that with soaring diesel prices and rising energy costs linked to the President’s war in Iran, it is critical to continue to protect and champion energy efficiency initiatives. The Senator expressed her satisfaction at the Senate’s bipartisan decision to recognize Energy Efficiency Day and reaffirm its significance.

Several other Senators co-led the resolution alongside Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) and co-sponsored it. Among them are U.S. Senators Chris Coons (D-DE), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Jack Reed (D-RI), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Peter Welch (D-VT), Angus King (I-ME), Tina Smith (D-MN), Ron Wyden (D-OR), Richard Durbin (D-IL), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Ed Markey (D-MA), Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Tim Kaine (D-VA), Mark Warner (D-VA), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), John Hickenlooper (D-CO) and Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE).
Senator Shaheen has been a fervent supporter of energy efficiency throughout her tenure in Congress, pushing for lower energy costs for Granite State constituents and endorsing clean energy initiatives. In a recent move, she urged the Trump Administration, along with a bipartisan group of Senators, to expedite the release of funds for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). LIHEAP aids in addressing emergency heating needs and weatherizing homes against harsh weather conditions. Over 57,000 Granite Staters depend on this program to help pay their home heating bills.
Earlier this year, she proposed bipartisan legislation to ensure the timely distribution of funds from the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) and State Energy Program to state agencies and local partners engaged in cost-saving energy initiatives. Senator Shaheen also played a key role in supporting the Inflation Reduction Act and was a lead negotiator of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Both these pieces of legislation have made significant investments in energy efficiency and reducing home energy bills. As part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, she helped secure $3.5 billion in additional funding for WAP, including $18 million for New Hampshire.
