Recent announcements of a proposed wealth tax in California have not been well-received by the state’s entrepreneurs and businesses. Many of which, are beginning to consider leaving California. Among these are prominent figures in the tech industry who have united to challenge the state’s left-leaning policies.

Tech Industry’s Response to California’s Wealth Tax

According to a New York Post report, a gathering of around 350 individuals took place in Mountain View, California. This meeting featured tech industry leaders, elected officials, and other individuals keen to challenge the state’s progressive policies. Business executives leading the group urged attendees to resist abandoning California, and instead, push for more moderate political representation.

Challenging the Status Quo

The group’s members are urging Californians to challenge left-leaning policies in the state. Ripple Chairman Chris Larsen, during the event, criticized the San Francisco CEO tax, calling it a “stupid job-killing idea”. He also highlighted the need to balance labor’s influence on elected officials in the state.

Support for Centrist Candidates

Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan hosted the event, and also launched “Garry’s List” to support centrist candidates in California. The initiative aims to back those who support policies that will improve the state’s schools and address housing and public safety issues.

Policies such as the San Francisco CEO tax and a proposed wealth tax targeting billionaires have sparked pushback from California centrists.

Garry’s List and Other Initiatives

Garry’s List is a blog written by Tan with the help of AI. The blog focuses on voter education, and criticizes anti-growth policies, wealth taxes, and a recent San Francisco teachers strike. However, Garry’s List is just one of several initiatives formed to counter the leftward drift of California politics. Others include “Grow California” by Larsen and Tim Draper, and “Building a Better California” by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, venture capitalist Michael Moritz, and other tech leaders.
