Time to Stop the NGO Funding Excess

TL/DR –

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has exposed a system where billions of taxpayer dollars are funneled into pseudo-charities that support primarily Democratic causes, according to Scott Walter, president of the Capital Research Center. He cites the Solidarity Center, which receives 99% of its revenue from taxpayers and donates predominantly to Democrats, and the Environmental Law Institute, which allegedly promotes climate litigation while receiving government awards. Walter argues against the use of tax dollars to fund political operations by any party, suggesting that “legitimate nonprofits that actually help people” be accountable to their donors rather than government bureaucrats.

Unveiling the Exploitation of Taxpayer Dollars by Pseudo-Charities

Each year, countless taxpayer dollars in the US support pseudo-charities that act as Democratic Party extensions. Unwittingly, about half of Americans who vote Republican are financing their political opposition. The corruption is even more extensive than most would suspect, with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) now disclosing this manipulative system.

Billions are directed to groups that are not genuinely non-governmental organizations (NGOs), but rather, essentially government organizations (BGOs).

Case Study: The Solidarity Center

Take the Solidarity Center for example, which has received over $86 million in federal funding since 2008, $61 million of which came under the Biden administration. This union-created entity gets 99% of its revenue from taxpayers, serving the AFL-CIO, which directed 86% of its political donations to Democrats in the 2024 election.

The Solidarity Center not only advances union causes but also advocates for radical “climate justice” and diversity initiatives. When DOGE advised halting its federal funding, the group immediately sued the Trump administration.

Common Disguised Funding Schemes

This is one instance of numerous similar ploys, such as federal agencies awarding grants to school districts to pay groups like Planned Parenthood for promoting gender ideology. Essentially, it’s money laundering disguised as charity.

The pattern is blatant and disturbing: tax dollars fund organizations that support an expansive government, aiding in electing politicians who sustain the funding. It’s a self-sustaining cycle of cronyism.

Funding Large NGOs, Not Community Nonprofits

Nonprofit leaders who want to maintain the influx of government money object to DOGE’s investigations. However, nonprofits shouldn’t be as dependent on government funding as one might be on drugs. Most federal funding doesn’t reach community-based nonprofits but large, government-dependent nonprofits which are often less effective in truly aiding people.

Large NGOs are more successful at lobbying for big-government agendas and filing lawsuits. Research found 15 government-funded nonprofits that sued Trump in his first term month, collectively receiving at least $1.6 billion taxpayer funding.

Manipulation and Misinformation

The Environmental Law Institute embodies this regulatory capture, operating a “Climate Judiciary Project” while receiving awards from government agencies. This project “educates” judges about climate litigation – the same judges presiding over cases intended to transfer billions from energy companies to environmental groups.

The corruption was seen in the $27 billion Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, hidden in the Inflation Reduction Act. As Peter Schweizer, a government accountability expert, states, this fund is likely “the most corrupt slush fund in U.S. history.”

These manipulative tactics are designed to suppress legitimate oversight of taxpayer dollars. It’s crucial to support authentic charity work while opposing the use of tax dollars to fund partisan political operations.

With a deficit-laden government, we can’t afford to waste billions on political advocacy masked as charity. Genuine nonprofits will be stronger when they’re accountable to donors who support their mission, not government bureaucrats. It’s time to halt this exploitative cycle.
