TL/DR –
Indiana State University reports that 72 of Indiana’s 92 counties are rural, with small businesses in these areas playing a crucial role in the economy. The USDA has been supporting these industries since 2008 through the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP), most recently awarding $46,025 to farming equipment company New Holland for the installation of solar panels. This investment will save the business $5,831 annually and replaces 59,424 kilowatt hours annually, making the company more energy efficient and reducing their carbon footprint.
USDA Invests in Rural Indiana Businesses
Indiana’s 72 rural counties play a significant role in driving the state’s economy. These small communities have been receiving vital support from the USDA since 2008, according to Indiana State University.
Anthony Kirkland, USDA Business Program Director for Indiana, emphasized the critical role of rural small businesses in the state’s economy. The USDA has been aiding these businesses mainly through the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP).
Following the enactment of the Inflation Reduction Act, REAP was allotted $2 billion to support rural businesses, such as New Holland in Logansport. The farming equipment company has utilized the funding to generate new income and reduce energy costs.
New Holland was awarded $46,025 to install solar panels. The project will save them $5,831 annually, replacing 59,424 kilowatt-hours each year. This initiative will enhance their energy efficiency and reduce their carbon footprint.
The owner of New Holland, Jim Straeter, expressed their commitment to sustainability. The company, which started as a single store in 1984, has expanded to seven outlets and now provides solar installation, creating jobs in rural areas across the state.
Straeter believes that grant investments like these can help rural communities prosper. He said, “We need to responsibly maintain the infrastructure and have policies that allow rural businesses to succeed.”
With increased funding, the REAP is now capable of supporting about 505 energy projects undertaken by rural businesses. The USDA accepts applications year-round, and Jamie.wilson@usda.gov is the point of contact for interested Indiana rural business owners.
