100 Unite for Christmas Eve Middle East Peace Vigil

TL/DR –

Due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, Bethlehem has cancelled its Christmas celebrations. A vigil was held at Hance Park, with about 100 people from diverse backgrounds uniting to pray for peace and an end to the conflict. The event was organized by the Arizona Interfaith Vigil Coalition for Permanent Ceasefire and was attended by many families, including that of Athena Salman, a Palestinian-American and Arizona State Representative.

The Israel-Hamas conflict overshadows Christmas in Bethlehem

The ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict has put a damper on Christmas celebrations in Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus. The city’s usual festivities have been cancelled due to the unfolding situation.

Global prayers for peace amidst the conflict

Pope Francis, among many others worldwide, is praying for peace. This sentiment resonates locally where a poignant holiday vigil at Hance Park assembled approximately 100 people. They expressed their heartache and hope through songs, poems, candles, and prayers.

Efforts by the Arizona Interfaith Vigil Coalition for Permanent Ceasefire

“Celebrating Christmas and the birth of the ‘Prince of Peace’ feels discordant amidst the suffering in Bethlehem”, said Kai Newkirk of the Arizona Interfaith Vigil Coalition for Permanent Ceasefire, which organized the event. The initiative brought together individuals of various faiths, races, and backgrounds, all advocating for an end to the Israel-Hamas War.

“Identifying our shared desires for peace, justice, dignity, and security – for Palestinians and Israelis alike – helps us recognize that unity is a powerful tool for seeking a ceasefire”, Newkirk added.

Local community’s plea for peace and justice

Among those present was Palestinian-American Arizona State Representative and mother, Athena Salman. She believes that our shared humanity can bring us together and will ultimately bring justice for both Palestinians and Israelis. The group is finding it difficult to embrace the Christmas spirit in light of the conflict and is urging those in power to end the war.

“Our greatest Christmas wish is a ceasefire in Gaza, Israel, and Palestine,” iterated Newkirk. The coalition plans to organize more events akin to Sunday’s vigil and vowed to continue until the violence ceases.

The ongoing ground operation in Gaza

The vigil occurred as Israeli forces escalated their ground operation in Gaza. U.S. President Joe Biden has faced criticism after revealing that he did not request a ceasefire during his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. However, he emphasized the protection of civilians in Gaza. The death toll is now over 20,000 Palestinians, while Netanyahu has reaffirmed his resolve for a total victory.
