Zebras on the Loose near North Bend, Interstate 90

Four zebras were spotted loose just off Interstate 90 close to North Bend on Sunday afternoon, according to Trooper Rick Johnson, a spokesperson for the Washington State Patrol. By Sunday evening, two of the striped escapees had been returned to their trailer, while a baby zebra was successfully corralled.

The zebras had strayed from I-90 to the small town of North Bend after their trailer doors came unhinged near Exit 32, Johnson reported. The local community quickly mobilized to assist in the retrieval of the wandering zebras.

The driver, who was transporting the zebras to Montana for unknown reasons, had unwittingly let the animals loose when he stopped to secure the trailer.

Eyewitness Laura Fisher was cruising at 70 mph on I-90 with her son when they observed the trailer doors flapping unsecured. Initially, they believed the trailer was empty, only to be startled by the sight of nervous zebras on the brink of jumping out.

Fisher expressed concern over the potential risk to other drivers and the zebras themselves if they had jumped out of the moving trailer. They then sped up to avoid the precarious situation and noticed another motorist signaling the trailer driver to pull over.

Animal control specialists from the King County Sheriff’s Office were on site assisting with the situation. However, they could not offer any explanation as to how the zebras managed to escape from their trailer.
