ArtPrize Oasis Welcomes ‘A Joyful Noise’ After Vandalism Incident

TL/DR –

Mary Seger, an artist whose windchimes were stolen from her ArtPrize piece, was offered assistance by ArtPrize and the community to move her artwork to a safer location, the ArtPrize Oasis. At this venue run by ArtPrize, Seger’s work will have overnight security. Following the ArtPrize event, the chimes will be sold, ranging from $30 to $75, and Seger plans that this will be her final year participating in ArtPrize.

After ArtPrize artist Mary Seger’s windchimes were stolen, the community rallied and ArtPrize offered her a new venue for her piece, “A Joyful Noise”.

Mary Seger, an ArtPrize contestant from Grand Rapids, Michigan, remained positive despite the theft of her windchimes by some youths. This was all caught on CCTV. Her piece, titled “A Joyful Noise”, had required months to create.

Upon hearing of Mary’s plight, ArtPrize extended their support and offered her an alternative location for her work, ArtPrize’s exhibits director JoLee Kirkikis-Casares confirmed.

“A Joyful Noise” is now exhibited in the ArtPrize Oasis at 555 Monroe Avenue NW, a venue managed by ArtPrize with overnight security.

With the help of her husband and some ArtPrize staff members, Mary reinstalled her windchimes, which were also aided by locals who had heard her story.

“I’m very happy. Last interview I did with you guys, I was pretty angry. But not today. Today, I’m pretty happy. Even the grouchy person will smile,” Mary said.

She is inviting everyone to come and enjoy the music from her windchimes. After ArtPrize, the windchimes will be for sale, priced between $30 and $75 based on their design. They will be available for purchase at the Recycled Art Market at City High Middle School on Nov. 4.

Mary plans to retire from participating in ArtPrize to spend more time fishing and enjoying other ArtPrize pieces.
