Midwest Storm Spurs Tornadoes and Power Outages
The Midwest experienced a severe storm on Monday, producing several tornadoes, including one near Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana experienced a series of dangerous thunderstorms, accompanied by damaging winds, as reported by the National Weather Service. Tornadoes were reported near Des Moines, Iowa, O’Hare Airport, and Sugar Grove, located 40 miles west of Chicago.
By early Tuesday, tornado warnings covering 13 million residents in Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin had been lifted. However, parts of Illinois remained under a flash flood warning due to heavy rainfall ranging between two and five inches. Travelers at O’Hare Airport reported turbulent conditions, with videos showing crowded terminals. Over 60 flights were cancelled and nearly 400 suffered delays, according to the flight tracking website FlightAware. Midway Airport in Chicago also reported 34 cancellations and over 100 delays.
About 300,000 people in Northern Illinois and 170,000 in Indiana were left without power early Tuesday following the storm. The Northern Indiana bureau of the Weather Service reported a 10-mile power outage that included their agency.
