TL/DR –
The University of Michigan Central Student Government discussed a resolution proposed by Disability Culture at the University of Michigan to establish a disability culture center on campus, and a resolution to establish a task force to support students affected by the Israel-Hamas war. They passed the resolution for the creation of a Disability Culture Center, with representatives arguing it would provide a safe, accessible space for people with disabilities. The vote against the task force was motivated by a lack of support, and concerns that the task force would create more problems than it solves.
University of Michigan Student Government’s Recent Meeting Highlights
University of Michigan’s Central Student Government (CSG) convened on Tuesday in Pierpont Commons’ East Room. They deliberated over the proposal AR 13-046 for a disability culture center on campus, and AR 13-038 for a task force supporting students amid the Israel-Hamas conflict, both mooted by Disability Culture at the University of Michigan.
The meeting initiated with a moment of silence for the one-year anniversary of the Michigan State University shooting, led by Jarek Schmanski, CSG speaker and LSA senior.
The assembly subsequently filled vacant roles with Angelica Previero, a Rackham student, elected as resolution vice chair, and freshman Taylor Peterson as the legislative delegate for new students of Michigan.
AR13-046 urges CSG to endorse a Disability Culture Center. Advocating for autistic U-M community members, Daegan Reynolds, founder of U-M Autism Spectrum Club, emphasized how the center could help alleviate their struggles.
Ava Armour, lead facilitator of Disability Culture at U-M, supports the center as a protected, accessible space that promotes disability culture and arts. AR 13-046 was passed unanimously.
The meeting proceeded with AR 13-038, proposing a campus task force to address the Israel-Hamas conflict. Alexander Gavulic, CSG communications committee chair, voiced concerns over CSG’s suitability to enforce such a task force.
Rackham Representative Erin Neely, the resolution’s sponsor, proposed the task force after unsuccessful attempts to rally support from the Graduate Employees Organization and its Palestine Working Group. AR 13-038 was not passed with a 6-19 vote against.
