Experience ‘A Taste of Melanin’: Exciting Valleywide Events in February

Mya Kai Creative Agency is hosting an event series called A Taste of Melanin for Black History Month. The series involves experiences, exhibits, live performances, and workshops showcasing Black culture. It includes activities such as a silent disco at the George Floyd Art Exhibit, a film event featuring “Black Panther”, a karaoke night, and an evening of games, workshops and panel discussions at a football stadium.


A Taste of Melanin: Celebrating Black History Month

Phoenix’s Mya Kai Creative Agency, a Black-owned entity, is set to host A Taste of Melanin. The event series, running through February, aims to honor Black History Month and shed light on the diverse facets of Black culture via interactive exhibits, live performances, and educational workshops.

Founder Michael Jackson stated, “We want to create true events for Black History Month and educate the public on how Black culture has evolved over the years. Our mission is to create inclusive spaces to acknowledge the profound influence of Black people on American culture.”

Event Schedule:

Silent Disco: Kicking off the George Floyd Art Exhibit, this 18+ event on Friday, Feb. 2 at ASU Art Museum (51 E. 10th St., Tempe) focuses on the transformative impact of Black culture on contemporary music and protest music.

Movie in the Gallery: On Saturday, Feb. 10, Phoenix Art Museum (1625 N. Central Ave.) presents “Black Panther” and a special panel discussion on the experiences of Black filmmakers and writers in today’s world.

Trap Karaoke: On Saturday, Feb. 17, Onyx Art Gallery (1346 W. Roosevelt St., Suite A, Phoenix) welcomes guests 21+ to discover the influence of spoken word and poetry on modern-day hip-hop.

This is Melanin: An all-ages event on Saturday, Feb. 24, at Mountain America Stadium (500 E. Veterans Way, Tempe) featuring games, a market with 25+ vendors, complimentary haircuts, speakers, workshops, and discussions on financial empowerment, home buying, and more. Sponsored by the Black Philanthropy Initiative.

A Taste of Melanin Restaurant Week, from Feb. 8 to Feb. 16, will showcase the culinary skills of over 15 Black-owned restaurants in the Valley.
