GenCyber Camp Students Showcase Final Projects

TL/DR –

Thirty-four students from across the U.S. have completed their certification from the GenCyber Camp at Northern Michigan University. The camp, which focused on various types of cyber hacking including Linux, Python, and ethical hacking, ended with the students presenting capstone projects on diverse topics like obtaining passwords and manipulating car dashboards. Michael Sauer, the director of the U.P. Cybersecurity Institute, commended the camp as a good introduction to cybersecurity and mentioned plans to host another cyber-focused camp next summer.

GenCyber Camp Certifies 34 Students in Cybersecurity Skills

On Friday, 34 students from across the U.S. successfully completed their cybersecurity certification from the GenCyber Camp at Northern Michigan University.

These high school students showcased their capstone projects involving varied hacking techniques, from password acquisition to car dashboard manipulation, capping off the two-week intensive GenCyber Camp.

According to U.P. Cybersecurity Institute Director Michael Sauer, the camp provided hands-on experiences across diverse cybersecurity domains, including Linux, Python, and ethical hacking.

“We spent the last week focusing on auto cyber hacking. The students were then directed to apply their newfound skills in their Capstone projects,” Sauer explained.

Sauer emphasized that the camp acts as an excellent introduction to cybersecurity for individuals uncommitted to a full-fledged college program. He also highlighted the emerging cybersecurity opportunities in regions like the U.P., with three cybersecurity firms recently setting up in Marquette.

“Cybersecurity offers well-paying jobs and the flexibility to work remotely, making it an ideal career choice for students in rural communities,” Sauer said.

Participant Alexander Hansen singled out auto hacking as the highlight of his experience. “We learned how to manipulate car systems, which was pretty neat,” he shared.

Residents of Marquette can look forward to another cyber-based camp next summer, Sauer confirmed.
